Take Flight #3

September 19, 2008 11:35 AM

Today's TV programming: good or bad?  Discuss.

Putting politics aside, one of the more polarizing debates in our society is the quality of contemporary TV programming.  There are those who love it, pointing to brilliantly produced serial dramas, innovative single-camera comedies, and highbrow reality shows.  Then there are those who think that what's on the tube is both a cause and a symptom of society's moral and intellectual decline.  They sometimes reference the same programs, but use different descriptors.

Well, a large contingent of well-dressed, well-known TV supporters are due to gather in Hollywood this Sunday to celebrate the best stuff on the box.  It's the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards.

There's never any shortage of pre-award show coverage, but Newsweek.com has done something really novel.  Their series, Emmy Roundtable, is a sequence of casual chats between a few Best Actor and Best Actress nominees: Weeds' Mary- Louise Parker, The Office's Rainn Wilson, Mad Men's John Slattery, Brothers and Sisters' Rachel Griffiths, and Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall.  The discussions are led by Newseek editors Marc Peyser and Joshua Alston.

All eight installments are available as a free podcast:

The stars discuss the art of the acceptance speech:

"The Emmy vibe":

Speaking of the Emmys, we'd like to congratulate VoloMedia content partners NBC News, MSNBC, and WashingtonPost.com for their collective 20 News & Documentary Emmy nominations!  Good luck!

The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards airs Sunday, September 21 at 8:00/7:00c on ABC.
